Launching New Initiatives at COP28

As part of its ongoing commitment, TikTok coincided with its 2023 #ClimateAction campaign launch with the COP28 UN Climate Change Conference. This included the introduction of a $1M initiative to combat climate misinformation. This campaign supports Verified for Climate, a United Nations and Purpose joint program.

The initiative will assemble a Verified Champions team comprising scientists and trusted experts from Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, and Spain. These champions will assist selected TikTok creators in developing educational content that counters climate misinformation and disinformation, thereby encouraging climate action within the TikTok community.

Partnerships for Climate Literacy

TikTok continuously seeks ways to empower its community with authoritative information on crucial topics, including climate literacy. In line with this, the platform is excited to collaborate with a team of experts to inform and inspire its global community further.

On the other hand, Melissa Fleming, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, expressed her enthusiasm about onboarding a team of trusted messengers who will help disseminate factual, trustworthy climate content to TikTok’s sizeable global audience. She emphasized that given the scale and urgency of the climate crisis, the need for accurate, science-based information has never been greater.

TikTok’s Efforts to Combat Climate Misinformation

TikTok’s efforts to combat harmful misinformation and promote authoritative information are continuous. Its policies prohibit climate change misinformation that undermines the well-established scientific consensus, such as content denying the existence of climate change or the factors that contribute to it.

Fostering Climate Action and Literacy

As part of its global #ClimateAction campaign, TikTok has partnered with Emirates Nature-WWF to launch “Nature Diaries,” an exclusive video series designed to promote climate action and literacy. This series features eight immersive episodes that combine education and adventure, inspiring users to drive actionable change.

Simultaneously, TikTok is excited to bring six creators from around the world to the COP28 summit in Dubai. These creators will share crucial conversations from the conference and join non-profit partners to discuss and explore best practices of utilizing authentic sustainability content to drive positive impact.

The platform inspires its users to positively impact our world by raising climate change awareness, encouraging sustainable living habits, and promoting climate solutions. Popular hashtags such as #ClimateChange, #ClimateAction, and #SustainableLiving have amassed billions of video views, demonstrating the platform’s influence in spreading climate awareness.
