However, this setup was recently tested when the board dismissed Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, alleging inconsistencies in his communications with the board. This sudden decision, which also removed OpenAI president and chairman Greg Brockman from the board, caught many off guard, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and other investors.

The board’s decision to fire Altman seems rooted in its commitment to ensuring the safe development of powerful AI. As the directors saw it, Altman’s alleged lack of candor hindered their ability to fulfill their responsibilities. The fallout from Altman’s dismissal, however, was far-reaching and immediate. Altman’s departure sparked an outcry among employees and heightened his stature as a figurehead in AI development.

An open letter signed by over 95 percent of OpenAI’s roughly 770 employees challenged the competence of the directors. The employees threatened to quit and join a new advanced AI research division at Microsoft, formed by Altman and Brockman if the board members did not reinstate Altman and resign.
